The Pros and Cons of “Yaeba” Teeth

I’ve received an email from a girl asking me to post my opinions on “yaeba” (as did every other Japan blogger, evidently!) This is when a girl has an extra tooth growing out of her gum, otherwise known as the “snaggletooth,” and it’s considered very cute in Japan. The lady in question has written an English blog entry about it here.

I can take or leave the yaeba teeth. I think the bikini-clad girls in this yaeba slide-show I’ve been directed to are attractive in spite of rather than because of their chompers, but I certainly wouldn’t tell any of them to piss off to the dentist if they asked me on date.

Nice… er… teeth!

I’m not a body fascist or anything, and I think such quirks can add character to a face. Thomas Hardy wrote in “Tess of the D’urbervilles” something like “it was the touch of the imperfect upon the perfect that gave Tess her beauty,” regarding a mole on her face, and this thinking can be applied to Yaeba teeth. And, perhaps, when you discover an incredibly sexy girl has a snaggletooth, she instantly seems more attainable, unlike an airbrushed magazine model.

As a Brit, I’m less sensitive to dodgy dentistry than North Americans.
And, to be honest, I’m more concerned with other areas of the body! You don’t need to look at the mantlepiece when you’re stoking the fire. Ahem.
Mind you, one of those vampire fangs could do some serious damage in the trouser department. (Come on, I quoted Thomas Hardy, so I’ve earned the right to a dick joke!)

Final thought: Having a girlfriend with “yaeba” teeth would be useful when you can’t find the tin opener.

    Haha. Very nice.
I agree, too many Americans get hung up on having to have perfect teeth, But a train-wreck of a smile can cause heart palpitations if you ask me.

And, regardless of references to famous literature, you have the right to post dick jokes any time you like 😉

There’s a definite line between the odd tooth that is out of whack and a whole mouthful of madness!

The ones shown on that site are very mild and using attractive girls to model them which helps ease things … some of less attractive girls with severe dental issues can be a bit of a worry ….. as you say, when delicate parts of your body are exposed to such and environment!

You need to be able to pass the apple test.

    Step one:
Throw an apple at the subject’s mouth area.

    Step two:
    Check if the apple sticks.

    Apple sticks = fail
    Apple doesn’t stick = pass.

    Good one, Sasutan!

  10. I’m freaking out, We have quite excellent dental hygene only 1 cavity and just began flossing actually nicely and rinsing myteeth twice per day. I’ve only a few teeth that are feeling just a little lose and a single wiggles (even though I think I did that just from messing with it) I have a dentist appointment in one month, but I would like to know if I will need to panic and what the expense are going to be if this is serious, I have dental insurance but they do not cover significantly given that it is an individual plan. If anyone understands anything please allow me know!

british people have terrible teeth, so you’re not the best person to write this article

    • Roaf says:

Yeah, I said that in the article.
If anything, it makes me more likely to be objective.

Although, that is an outdated stereotype, like saying Americans all wear cowboy hats.

  23. Nicole says:

Straight up WEIRD!!! Those teeth are just going to be problems for future periodontal disease bc it collects food and it’s harder to remove so essentially this is one of the most unintelligent trends I’ve heard to this day.

i think it is adorable. its good to be open minded and looking at other cultures way of doing things. i also like that an imperfection can look adorable. personally I think its cool that imperfections can be made into something positive. I dont see why everything should only be judged based on culturr that seems to be dominating the world, which is western culture, i have no problem with western culture and its ideals, its just a breath of fresh air to see something different. 🙂
